A great way to improve an applicant’s chances of being accepted for an internship is by creating a resume. A resume will include all educational background, extra-curricular activities, work experience, volunteer service, awards, skills, academic achievements, leadership positions held and linguistic abilities. However, resumes could also include other details as well, so do not be disheartened from adding any personal information that would be helpful in the internship.
Although some companies do not require applicants to submit a resume, it is highly recommendable to create one as it will lay out an applicant’s strengths and past experiences. It will make an applicant stand out amongst the rest. First of all, an excellent resume will include a person’s past educational background. If an applicant achieves high scores or GPA in their respective schools, it is highly recommendable to list out some of the grades. If an applicant has attended another school previously, it is advised to list out any achievements or scores from that school as well. Secondly, an applicant’s extra-curricular activities should also be listed out, preferably chronologically. Even if an extra-curricular activity does not relate to the area of the internship, it is strongly recommendable to add it to the resume. If leadership positions were held by the applicant, please clearly emphasise this in the resume as companies are always looking for applicants with leadership experience. Thirdly, past work experiences will also be useful to add to a resume, however if an applicant does not have any work experience, don’t be discouraged! There are many past applicants in the Pathway Project that does not have prior internship or work experiences. Also, when possible, clearly list out the position the applicant held and the range of time. Next, any past or current volunteer service will also be very useful to add in a resume. For IB students, check CAS as there would be many activities that could be of value to add to the resume. Lastly, all skills that an applicant has, such as programming skills should be included. Linguistic abilities should also be included in the resume, and please list out any proficiency in the languages listed. By: Stanley Jonathan
